What to Expect From Dental Implants
Dental implants are the best option for missing, broken, or decayed teeth. In this article, we will discuss what to expect from dental implants.
First, what are dental implants? Dental implants are metal posts that an Implant Surgeon installs in the jaw bone. These metal posts are like natural teeth roots. These posts are the “implants”. Dental implants can help overall health and cosmetics.
Let’s Have a Look at What to Expect From Dental Implants
There are different implants and different needs. Some people only need one or two teeth replaced. Single tooth implants, or an implant supported bridge, work fine.
For more extensive needs, there are implant supported dentures and full arch implants.
Why Get Implants?
Implants are the closest thing to natural teeth. Because of their similarities to natural teeth roots, they are the best option.
Implants allow for a more complete diet because they function like your real teeth. With dental implants, you can eat foods that aren’t possible with dentures.
Implants stop bone loss. When teeth get broken or go missing, the jaw bone begins to shrink. This happens because there is no constant pressure on the jaw. Following the rule of nature–use it or lose it–the jaw shrinks.
This causes a “witch chin”. This is when the cheeks start to look sunken in and the chin gets more and more pointy.
This is common for people who wear dentures or have no teeth. Dental implants stop bone loss because, like natural teeth roots, they put pressure on the jaw bone.
Besides nutrition, stopping bone loss is one of the main benefits of dental implants.

Risks Associated With Dental Implants
Like all surgeries, there are risks with dental implant surgery. The implant may not fuse to the bone. If that happens, the implant would need to be removed and a new one installed.
Infection is a risk that comes with surgery as well. Implant Surgeons at Nuvia Dental take all precautions reducing risk of infection. Good hygiene after surgery will also reduce the chance of infection.
In rare cases, people have reported nerve damage and sinus problems. There are many nerves in the jaw bone. Nuvia Implant Surgeons use cutting edge technology to avoid damaging nerves.
A sinus lift (we’ll talk more about this later) could also cause issues with sinuses post surgery. This is rare as well. Nuvia Dental Implant Surgeons plan surgeries with pinpoint precision to reduce risks.
How To Prepare
Nuvia Dental Implant Center specializes and focuses on dental implants only. A thorough consultation with your own personal Implant Expert is the first step. This includes measurements and scans.
This information is then looked over by the Implant Surgeon who makes the detailed treatment plan.
This consultation costs hundreds of dollars at most implant centers. But, at Nuvia Dental Implant Center, we will waive this fee if you qualify for a free consultation voucher. We like to show the possibilities of dental implants. Many people think they are off limits, for whatever reason. Our goal is to show you they can be a reality. That is why we provide a consultation with scans and imaging.
After your consultation with the Implant Specialist… surgery day is set. Detailed instructions about fasting, medication, and night before preparation is provided at this time.
On Surgery Day
Expect to arrive fasting. Nuvia Dental Implant Center provides you with your very own anesthetist to administer anesthesia. Other implant centers try to cut corners by having the dental surgeon administer the anesthetic. At Nuvia Dental Implant Center we don’t cut corners.
Once safely sedated, the highly trained Implant Surgeon begins the procedure. Using the safesmile placement–state of the art mapping technology–the Implant Surgeon places the implants. Using pinpoint precision to ensure optimal placement.
After placing the implants, the surgeon may place a membrane to assist your body. This membrane speeds the healing process. Other clinics use a manufactured membrane. At Nuvia Dental, a membrane made from your own white blood cells gives you a healing advantage.
You will need a buddy to drive you home after surgery. This is included in the pre-operation instructions. You won’t be able to drive for about 24 hours following surgery.
Once home, you can start the healing process and be on the road to fully functional teeth.
Depending on how long you have been missing teeth, you may need a bone graft during surgery. The surgeon determines this after looking at scans and measurements from the consultation.
When the jaw bone shrinks (because teeth have been missing for an extended period of time)… a bone graft is usually needed.
There are different types of bone grafts.
Ridge Preservation – When the surgeon places bone into the empty socket of a tooth. This usually happens when a tooth is extracted or was accidentally knocked out.
Bone graft for thin jaw – This type of bone graft is when bone has become thin over time and the surgeon needs to build it up.
Sinus Lift – This is when the surgeon adds bone to the bottom of the sinus cavity, lifting it altogether. This gives enough bone for the implants, keeping them out of the sinus cavity.
If you have bone loss that requires a bone graft… the surgeon will add the bone and place the implants at the same time in most cases.
If this seems overwhelming, don’t worry. Your Implant Specialists will go over the process, in detail, from start to finish.
What to Expect After Implants
After you return home and have begun the healing process… you will be on a liquid diet for 2-3 days.
You will also need to keep your mouth clean to avoid infection.
Once your stitches heal… you will start to use a waterpik.
For the next 4 to 6 months you will need to be on a soft food diet. A good rule of thumb is to eat only things you can cut with your finger.
A little creativity and you will find there are plenty of foods available to you during this time.
Osseointegration takes 4 to 6 months. This is the process of the implants fusing to the jaw bone. This is the reason for the soft foods diet. If the implant isn’t given the time to heal, it could fail.
4 to 6 months flies by and it’s time for your smile reveal. But how do we know if your implants have fused?
At Nuvia Dental Implant Center, we use the Truintegration method. This measuring technique ensures the implant has fused properly. Other implant centers don’t measure with precision and instead guess. At Nuvia, we don’t guess.
Using Truintegration, we know if osseointegration has been successful. This increases the long term success of your dental implants.
Removable or Fixed
Depending on what you choose, you will have a fixed arch or removable denture.
The Dental Implant Surgeon installs the arch with screws or cement. This is not removable except by a dental professional. You won’t have to worry about removing it.
An implant supported removable denture will snap onto your implant posts. This denture will be removable, so you can clean it. But, secure enough that you won’t have to worry about it popping out or slipping around.
Your new teeth are just like regular teeth. Keep them clean. Good oral hygiene is a must. Although you can no longer get cavities, your gum health is important. Gum disease can cause implants to fail.
Dental implants are a great way to replace missing or damaged teeth. Teeth can get damaged from accidents, decay, or failed root canals.
If you are experiencing tooth loss, decay, pain or discomfort… implants could be the perfect solution.
Dental implants are also a great alternative for traditional denture wearers.
A Nuvia Dental Implant Specialist can tell you the options specific to your needs at a free consultation.
The sooner you find out what your implant needs are… the better.
Depending on how long your teeth have been missing, you may need a bone graft.
A bone graft is the process of adding bone to your jaw. Adding enough material for the implant. And bone graft increases the success of the implant. Without a proper bone graft, the implant won’t have enough material to be secured to. And it will most likely fail.
At your consultation, your Nuvia Implant Specialist will be able to see if you need a bone graft.
In most situations, the bone graft and implants are installed at the same visit.
After surgery, plan on a liquid diet for 2 – 3 days… then a soft food diet for 4-6 months.
When osseointegration is complete and the implant has fused to the bone… the surgeon can install the permanent teeth.
This could be a zirconia arch or an implant supported denture, depending on your needs and the type of implant.
An implant supported denture should not be confused with a traditional denture. Implant supported dentures are securely attached. You don’t have to worry about your denture sliding around or popping out.
Once osseointegration is complete (once your permanent teeth are installed)… your new life starts.
Dental implants can restore biting force to 95%. This means you can have steak, pizza, and all the other foods you love.
Because dental implants allow a more nutritious diet… they actually add precious years to your life.
When people have broken or missing teeth… or when people have traditional dentures… nutrition suffers. Eating becomes painful or eating becomes mundane. Without dietary nutrition, overall health suffers. And when overall health suffers, lifespan shortens.
Dental implants can drastically improve your life. If you have missing or broken teeth, or if you wear traditional dentures.
The sooner you are able to get dental implants, the better your health will be.
